(12 February 2002) A country in southeastern Europe. Romania has always been one of the reachest countries in southeastern Europe. It has still natural resources like oil and uncharted minerals (platinum, gold, uranium). For most of its history foreign powers (including the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires) were trying to control the country but it managed to maintain a certain line of independence. It was the only country in the region who did not fall under Ottoman control. The new changes in Europe has made the country to apply for EC partnership in which it is now applicant state.

Romania is the first country of Central and Eastern Europe to have official relations with the European Community: An agreement including Romania in the community’s Generalized System of Preferences in 1974 and an Agreement on Industrial Products in 1980 are signed. On June 22, 1995 Romania submits its application for EU membership and on February 15, 2000 EU accession negotiations are started with Romania. Romania’s aim is to gain EU membership in 2007.

Un om putred de bogat s-a retras intr-un sat, unde a intalnit un pescar sarac, care pescuia sa aiba ce sa puna pe masa. Bogatasul l-a sfatuit sa-si ia o plasa, sa tocmeasca oameni care sa-l ajute, sa exporte pestele si, in final, sa se imbogateasca. “Pentru ce sa fac asa ceva?” a intrebat pescarul.

Raspunsul a venit pe loc: “Pai, cand o sa fii bogat, te poti retrage intr-un sat si nu trebuie sa faci nimic decat sa pescuiesti toata ziua”.
